Protecting your bedroom against bed bug is critical if you want to sleep like a baby. This is something I wish I had known way before knowing about this epidemic by experimenting with it myself.
And even if your home or apartment has just been sprayed or treated for bed bugs removal, you should take immediate action to make sure that never happen again (it happened to me twice). If you’ve never had bed bug but live in an apartment, then it’s a matter of time before your neighbors brings in those critters and they start moving around from apartment to apartment using the cracks in the wall, baseboards, electrical outlets and so forth. And if they do, you’ll be VERY GLAD that they don’t end up in your bed because you’ve bed bug proofed it! Sleeping well is something we never think about until we’ve been through bed bug war.
Although it might seem tedious to do all of the steps bellow, it’s really a breeze and will take you 10-15 minutes maximum and trust me that once you’ve already had bed bugs, you’ll do everything to make sure that never happens again so don’t wait for that to happen. The idea of going to bed with those critters is enough to give you insomnia for a long time and feel paranoiac.
How to protect your bedroom (and sleep) from bed bugs? FOLLOW THESE STEPS:
1- YOUR BED MUST HAVE FEET
This is the first and most important step: make sure that your bed frame has FEET. This is important because of the next step where we will put coasters to protect it from bed bugs.
If it doesn’t have feet and you’d like to sleep soundly, then head over to your local IKEA and buy a simple, cheap bed frame. They have beds (like the example above on the right) that cost anywhere from 49$ to 130$ and are beautiful and simple.
2- USE BED BUGS COASTERS UNDER THE FEET
Now your first line of defense: put bed bug coasters under the 4 feet of the bed.
With good quality coasters, the bed bugs will try to get inside, then will fall in and be trapped, unable to climb the slick walls. Some coasters even have small compartments that help you track from where they came. Now that’s very useful.
3- YOUR BED MUST NOT TOUCH ANYTHING ELSE AROUND, INCLUDING WALLS AND FURNITURE
Although it might sometime be hard to do depending on the size of your bedroom, you should always move your bed AWAY from all walls, furniture and everything else that could touch it. They are the perfect bridge for the travelling bed bug to cross and give you nightmares.
Instead, move the bed further away from all directions, ideally 1 foot should do.
NOTE: bed bugs don’t jump, so even a 1 inch gap will insure that they can’t cross. But when making your bed be sure to manually move your bed covers AWAY from the wall or furniture so nothing touches anywhere around.
4- YOUR BED COVER MUST NOT TOUCH THE GROUND
Be SURE to double check every day that your bed cover DOESN’T TOUCH THE GROUND or any furniture or wall. You’ll need only one little corner of your bed cover to touche the ground and a bit of bad luck for bed bugs to find it and climb in your bed!
It’s good to put a note on your wall to remind you to check for that in the mornings.
5- IF YOU SUSPECT OR ALREADY HAVE BED BUGS, USE DIATOMACEOUS EARTH
If you already have bed bugs, know that you can kill bed bugs with Diatomaceous Earth! It takes time — up to two weeks — when you use the proper techniques and food-grade Diatomaceous Earth.
Spray it around all baseboards in your bedroom and around the feet of your bed and any other furniture that you suspect could hide them. Make sure that you have a continuous line (avoid gaps). Ideally you’d want to use a sprayer to help you do a better, more precise job but it’s optional.
Why is it useful to kill bed bugs? Diatomaceous Earth is made from a material called silica. It is made up of small particles that seem smooth to us, but to a bedbug they are razor sharp. As they walk across the DE, it cuts their abdomens. This causes them to become dehydrated and eventually die. It is very slow-acting. While most bedbugs will die in a week, some of them may live for over two weeks.
NOTE: Diatomaceous Earth is 100% safe for humans and pets.

6- USE PILLOW AND MATTRESS BED BUGS AND DUST MITE PROTECTORS
Get yourself bed bug pillow protectors and mattress protectors and wrap your pillows and mattress around them to prevent further invasions if the bed bugs are in your bed already or avoid them coming in the first place.
7- DON’T PUT (PARTY) GUEST’S COATS OR BAGS ON YOUR BED: THEY COULD BE INFECTED
Bed bugs can easily be carried over from home to home by backpacks, bags, shoes, clothes and coats. So if you’re throwing a great party, make sure that you don’t put anything on your bed! Otherwise you run the risk of having bed bugs colonizing your mattress…. And that’s bad.
8- DON’T ALLOW YOUR PET TO SLEEP ON YOUR BED, EVEN IF IT’S CUTE
Some people just love to sleep with their pets. And they know it’s a bad idea for many reasons. Well here’s one more reason: your pets can carry the bed bugs into your bed! So keep that door close and make sure your pet never get to your bed!
